Navigating at university and for school companions: the government does not support Retailleau

The Government of François Bayrou will not accept the proposals of the Minister of the Interior, Bruno Retailleau, to prohibit the use of the headscarf for school trip companions and university students, its spokesperson Sophie Primas said on Wednesday.

The LR Minister (Les Républicains) himself clarified that “this was his personal position and that this issue, probably not having a majority in Parliament, was not an issue that could be addressed by the Government in the current state of the parliamentary majority” , he stated. he noted during the report of the Council of Ministers at the Elysée.

Bruno Retailleau estimated on Monday in the newspaper Le Parisien that “accompaniers (on school trips) should not wear a veil,” considering that the veil is “a standard of Islam and an indicator of the inferiorization of women compared to men.”

“Exactly what the Taliban are accused of”

“School trips are extramural school,” he insisted, calling for a change in the law. He also spoke out in favor of banning the use of the headscarf at the university, which in both cases sparked strong criticism from the left of the political spectrum.

Bruno Retailleau wants to “prohibit Muslim women who wear (the veil) from pursuing higher education”, “precisely for which the Taliban is rightly criticized”, declared the Insoumis (LFI) deputy, Antoine Léaument.

A ruling by the Council of State considers that veiled mothers are not subject to religious neutrality when they accompany a class. Regarding the ban on the headscarf at the university, Emmanuel Macron harshly criticized it in 2016.
