“He knows why he did it”: Brigitte Macron defends her husband’s “mature” decision on the dissolution

The wife of the Head of State assured this January 10 that Emmanuel Macron “listens” to the criticism linked to the early legislative elections last July, which for him turned out to be a fiasco. However, he believes that “giving the French a voice is always good.”

Almost seven months later, there is still time for explanations. In the midst of the campaign to launch Operation Yellow Coins, Brigitte Macron spoke at length about the dissolution of the National Assembly decided by the Head of State last June.

Experienced by the macronie as a decision made alone, without much discussion with the lieutenants of his own camp, his wife refutes this observation.

“He consulted, I can promise you that it was a decision that he considered and after a while the decision has to be made, so he made it,” the former literature professor defended this Friday morning before the RTL microphone.

“Those who knew did not say they knew.”

However, Gabriel Attal, then prime minister, was not previously consulted, as he himself publicly admitted.

As for the presidents of the Assemblies, Yaël Braun-Pivet and Gérard Larcher, they were simply “informed” of Emmanuel Macron’s decision, as the head of the Senate had explained, and not “consulted” as provided for by the Constitution.

“Evidently, those who were not aware (before this decision) were not aware and those who were aware did not say that they were squaring the circle,” Brigitte Macron explains.

Among the few who were aware of this historic decision (only a previous dissolution had been pronounced in 1997 under Jacques Chirac), there are in particular Gérald Darmanin, then Minister of the Interior, and the indispensable Alexis Kohler, Secretary General of the Elysée.

“He knows why he did it.”

It must be said that the maneuver turned out to be a fiasco. Announced after a catastrophic European election for the presidential side, Emmanuel Macron, who already only had a relative majority, largely lost these early legislative elections.

Fixed in pain last SeptemberMichel Barnier only stayed in Matignon for three months and failed to get the state and social security budget approved.

Now charge against François Bayrou, who has become The Prime Minister, in turn, to achieve this. Enough to fuel criticism, even among Emmanuel Macron’s former lieutenants.

Unaccustomed to mea culpa, the president nevertheless acknowledged, during his wishes to the French on December 31, that the dissolution had “It brought more divisions than solutions”.

“He knows why he did it, but he also listens to what people tell him. It’s not easy to handle. But you have to choose a path, he chose a path because he thinks that giving a voice to the French is always good.” ”, Brigitte Macron defended herself further.

“Stop working for a while.”

Although he had already mentioned it several times – without ever putting it into practice – Emmanuel Macron promised on December 31 that he would ask the French to “decide” on “decisive issues” related to “our economy, our security, our children.”

After the Elysée, Brigitte Macron asked her husband “to stop working a little.” In November 2023, Emmanuel Macron had already spoken about his future to students in Kazakhstan. “I’ll probably do something completely different as soon as I’m done,” he said.
