The motion of censure against Bayrou’s government will be debated this Thursday

The motion of censure against the government of François Bayrou presented by rebel, environmentalist and communist deputies will be debated this Thursday starting at 3:00 p.m.

The motion of censure presented by rebel, environmentalist and communist deputies will be “debated tomorrow starting at 3 p.m. and put to a vote around 5:30 p.m.,” said the president of the National Assembly, Yaël Braun-Pivet, at the RTL microphone. this Wednesday, January 15.

The president of the France Insoumise group in the National Assembly, Mathilde Panot, presented on Tuesday a motion of censure against the government of François Bayrou, signed by 57 other deputies, coming from their ranks but also from communist and environmental groups.

A “denial of democracy”

The motion, presented shortly after the general policy declaration of the new Prime Minister, criticizes a “denial of democracy” in the appointment of François Bayrou and the refusal of the Head of Government to respect a vote of confidence. He also criticizes the composition of the government, “a provocation in itself that justifies censorship”, with Élisabeth Borne in National Education, who “brutalized Parliament with 23 resorting to 49.3”, and in the Interior with Bruno Retailleau “who dares to speak of ‘French paper’.”

The signatories also criticize François Bayrou’s choice to “revisit the budget presented by Michel Barnier”, his predecessor overthrown by a motion of censure, assuming “blocking any new ambitious fiscal measure”.

The motion is signed by 58 deputies, the minimum necessary, with the number of motions that each deputy can present being limited by virtue of article 49.2 of the Constitution. Among the signatories are seven deputies from the environmental and social group and nine deputies from the Democratic and Republican Left group, composed in particular of elected communist officials.

Tensions on the left due to censorship

This motion has little chance of being adopted if the RN maintains its statements of recent days, according to which its deputies will not vote in its favor. But it created strong tensions within the New Popular Front.

The environmentalists will vote in favor, announced their leader in the Assembly, Cyrielle Chatelain, regretting that only “158 words after an hour and a quarter of speech” have been dedicated to the environment. The leader of the Communist Party, Fabien Roussel, stated that the communist deputies will vote in favor of this motion “in the current state of things.”

The head of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, who negotiated with the Prime Minister in recent days, asked François Bayrou for new concessions, in particular on pension reform, to escape censure. The socialists are expected in this vote by La France insoumise, after Jean-Luc Mélenchon has stated that “those who do not vote to censure abandon the agreement” of the New Popular Front.
