Dozens of protesters are concentrated outside the hotel where the PSD will hold its National Council this Thursday to protest reform projects that change the constitution on health issues and metadata.
The protesters were controlled by some police and they were holding signs that read “Who falls asleep in democracy, falls asleep in dictatorship” or “Caring for democracy is caring for everyone”.
The chairman of one of the platforms promoting the concentration, Citizenship XXI, explained to Lusa that the aim of the protest will be to deliver his manifesto to the PSD chairman, Luís Montenegro, and later to the parliament.
This “constitution defense concentration”, António Nogueira declared, is protesting the possibility, broadcast by the media, that PSD and PS could include in the constitution measures that would allow detentions for health emergencies and access to communication metadata.
From the Marquês area, protesters say they plan to go to Largo do Rato, where the PS is also meeting its National Political Commission tonight to discuss its constitutional reform project.
The PSD has not yet released the articles of its constitutional reform project, but only a summary of the measures, which does not address these two themes.
Among other proposals, the PSD in its constitutional reform project will propose a single seven-year term for the president of the republic, set the maximum number of deputies at 215 and the minimum at 181, always in an odd number, and the reduction of the age of the inheritance to vote from 18 to 16 years.
Chega opened a constitutional review process with the delivery to parliament of a constitutional review project that was approved on October 12. According to the constitution of the republic, “all other projects must be submitted within a 30-day deadline if a constitutional revision project is submitted,” with the deadline expiring on Friday.
In addition to Chega and PSD, PS, Iniciativa Liberal and PAN have already indicated that they will come up with projects to amend the Constitution.
