Don’t just treat the “symptoms”, go to the source. A few hours after the landing in Toulon of 230 migrants from the humanitarian ship Ocean Viking, Emmanuel Macron spoke this Friday on the management of migratory flows.
“Right now, we are having a debate in France on migration issues, a very important debate that requires very strong, rigorous responses, etc.,” said the French president during the Paris Peace Forum.
He continued: “But this debate, we will never resolve it, in the first place if we do not have a true European organization that works, and less if we do not know how to solve the problems of inequalities with the African continent and the other shores of the Mediterranean. Because it turns out that France It’s not an island, and probably won’t be for years to come.”
“International cooperation is necessary”
“If we fail to put public debate at the center of all this – we need cooperation to prevent migration and fight the inequalities that produce it – we will spend crazy time and energy just trying to get treatment for the symptoms,” Emmanuel Macron added. International cooperation is necessary,” he insisted.
The Ocean Viking humanitarian ship disembarked 230 migrants rescued in the Mediterranean on Friday morning at the military port of Toulon, before some were relocated to the rest of Europe. The ship wandered the Mediterranean for three weeks, in the absence of a port that would agree to receive them, and its arrival is the first in France, which is causing strong tensions with Italy.
