The assembly ends the discriminatory “seated and high” for the disabled vote

The National Assembly unanimously approved on Wednesday a change in its regulation that ends the possibility that certain votes take place “for granted and raised”, a discriminatory disposition for the disabled.

The deputies unanimously adopted a proposal for resolution in this sense of the deputy of the ecological and social group Sébastien Peytavie, himself in a wheelchair, and the president of the already assembly Braun-Pivet (Renaissance), proposed on the occasion of the anniversary of the 2005 law on disability.

“A so powerful Oh symbol”

“This proposal for a resolution is undoubtedly a symbol, but such a powerful symbol, to show that each one, whatever their situation, has the right to sit in this assembly and participate in our democratic life,” said Sébastien Peytavie, sitting in his chair at the foot of the stants that leads to the gallery.

Paraplegic from childhood, this chosen environmentalist has regularly denounced the insufficiency of the Bourbon Palace to disability from his first election as a deputy for the legislative elections of June 2022.

Until now, several articles in the regulation of the assembly provided the vote of “sitting and raised”, more frequently to rule out a doubt about the result of a vote.

A disposition in the Senate soon adopted

But it is also in this way that the heaviest sanctions are approved or rejected, such as the one that provides the temporal exclusion of a deputy. Impossible for elected officials who could not get up and voted.

The Senate will also modify its rules in this regard on April 8, said Deputy Sébastien Peytavie.
