European defense in the heart of debates. Taking into account Russia as a “threat”, French president Emmanuel Macron declared in his television speech U. March 5 that he wanted to open a “strategic debate” on the protection of our allies of the European continent “for our nuclear deterrence.”
An idea that seems to bear fruit in the opinion, according to the latest survey “L ‘Opinion Live” of the Elabe Institute for BFMTV published on Wednesday, March 12. 59% of respondents believe that “France is interesting to protect other European countries, especially with nuclear weapons.”
The idea seduces the voters on the left (76%), the presidential camp (84%) and the right (65%), but much less voted at the end right (39%).
France, a “great military power”?
The French interviewees were also questioned about the military credibility of our country. Therefore, 56% of them believe that France is a great military power and 60% think they are able to help other European countries in case of an attack on Russia. But only 48% judge that they are able to defend themselves in the case of a Russian attack against its territory and only 41% that is powerful enough to deter Russia to attack it.
During his speech last week, the Head of State also considered that the “additional investments” in the defense “became essential.” But how to finance this effort?
Among the hypotheses mentioned in the public debate, the financing clues preferred by opinion are the increase in taxes of housing and large richer companies (49% of the contributions), the launch of a national loan of the French (48% quotes) and the reorientation of part of financial investments (life insurance, retirement savings and salary …) (37% quotes).
These three clues are favored by the French, regardless of their political sensitivity, even if the electorate of the President of the Republic is more pronounced for the launch of a national loan (69%). The same is true for retirees (62%), while popular categories are more behind this issue (38%).
However, the reduction of social spending is rejected by a large majority of people surveyed (only 18% of appointments).
If the war in Ukraine has lasted three years, the activation of negotiations with the arrival of Donald Trump in power replaces the conflict in the heart of the news. And worried many French. 77% declare in our survey to worry that the military conflict spread in other countries near Russia and 23% fears that France one day worries about war.
