A small crop meeting in Matignon … that almost ended very badly. This Tuesday, March 18, Prime Minister François Bayrou, summoned several government members in Matignon. The president of the Modem was very angry with certain ministers who have been running for several days, by interposed means, on the issue of using the veil in sports competitions.
“He asked, he did not appreciate at all. We can have different opinions, but we do not attack colleagues,” he judges those around him. Therefore, François Bayrou asked five ministers to join him. And very quickly, “it becomes confrontation,” says a ministerial advisor.
On the one hand, Elisabeth Borne, the Minister of National Education with his colleague of Sports Marie Barsacq. On the other hand, the minister responsible for gender equality Aurore Bergé, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau and Justice Minister Gérald Darmanin.
The latter are supporters of a tougher line, favorable to the bill that comes from the right to the Senate and that prohibits the veil in sports competitions. And when the Sports Minister warns against the risk of Amalgams, the Seal Guardian accuses his colleague of naivety.
“Retailleau almost left the meeting”
The prime minister wanted to end this controversy and these peaks in the public square. But according to our information, the meeting called to Matignon was “stormy” and could leave traces. “The blood has fluid,” says an advisor. Just before Matignon’s meeting, Gérald Darmanin had put his “participation” in Bayrou in equilibrium. “We cannot remain in a government that cites these questions,” he told Parisino.
And “from the beginning, Retailleau almost left the meeting because the prime minister asked him to remain silent and did not like,” said one of the participants, still amazed. The exchanges are animated, François Bayrou manages to retain his minister who had increased. Elisabeth Borne is upset.
François Bayrou ends deciding the position of the government, follows the clan composed of Aurore Bergé, Gérald Darmanin and Bruno Retailleau, who wants to eliminate the veil of sports competitions and warns: “If there is one that does not feel comfortable, he can resign and his resignation will be accepted.”
A precarious balance
It is the first time that such tension has felt in government. “Polyphony is better than cacophony, after a while we must be in harmony,” said Sophie Primas, the government spokeswoman, who expects this type of episode not to happen again. But some of his colleagues little believe in him, because “the campaign (for the presidency of LR, to which Bruno Retilleau is a candidate, Note) we contaminate and others are already in the presidential elections. “
For this minister, “there is a short -scale game to try to exist, Retailleau threatened to renounce Algeria, Darmanin does it in the veil … they would be better to stay focused on their subjects.” It remains to see how long this precarious balance will remain.
