France calls for “the greatest caution” about the origin of the missile that fell in Poland, the Élysée Palace said on Wednesday, without ruling out that it could have been Ukrainian.
“Given what is at stake, it is logical that we approach the issue with the greatest caution,” stressed the French presidency on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Bali, Indonesia, recalling that “the risks of escalation are significant.”
“There is a lot of equipment in the region, a lot of weapons concentration. Many countries have the same type of weapons and therefore identifying the type of missile is not necessarily identifying the actor that launched it,” said an adviser to the president. Emmanuel Macron.
“Unlikely”
“You have to look at the facts very precisely, look at the information, the sky maps, see the readings from the satellites. This is a case where you can’t go wrong,” continued another presidential adviser.
“If it was a Ukrainian missile…it would not by nature be the same politically (as a Russian shot, editor’s note) because we did not imagine that Ukraine would intentionally fire at Poland,” he added.
US President Joe Biden said it was “unlikely” the missile was launched from Russia. NATO member Poland for its part mentioned a “made in Russia” missile and Kyiv implicated Moscow.
