“It is not a real estate issue”: Macron responds to Trump in his “Riviera” project in Gaza

In an interview broadcast on Wednesday in France 5, Emmanuel Macron repeated that “there can be no forced trips” of the residents of the Gaza Strip, facing the Donald Trump project to do so “Riviera du Middle East.”

In front of Donald Trump’s project to turn it into “Riviera du Middle East”, Emmanuel Macron Marta that the Gaza Strip “is not a real estate issue.” At the beginning of February, Donald Trump caused international protests by evoking an acquisition of the Gaza Strip by the United States to rebuild and do it “Riviera du Middle East”. For this, its inhabitants could move, according to the US president, to Egypt and Jordan, who strongly rejected this option.

Emmanuel Macron had already rejected these statements by Donald Trump. In an interview in the “It up to you” program in France 5 recorded on Tuesday and broadcast this Wednesday, April 9, he repeated that “there can be no forced trips” by the Gazaouis. Geneva conventions, which supervise international humanitarian law, also prohibit forced population transfers.

“We are not going to rebuild stateless people,” said the French president, adding that “it is up to us to build a solution, so it is not a real estate issue.”

“Simplism, sometimes, doesn’t help”

“Simply, sometimes, I don’t help. I tell President Trump: (…) ‘It is true that all that is too slow, I understand his impatience, maybe it would be great if one day he would develop in an extraordinary way, but there, our responsibility is to save lives, find peace and negotiate a political framework,” he enraged. “

“If all this does not exist, nobody will invest. Today nobody will put a penny in Gaza a penny,” he said.

Emmanuel Macron also announced on Wednesday that France could recognize a Palestinian state “in June” on the occasion of a conference that will coincide with Saudi Arabia in the United Nations in New York and that, according to him, it must also lead to Israel’s recognition by several countries.

Is Donald Trump when he says he wants to “take control of the gaza strip”?

“We have to go to recognition (from the Palestinian state, editor’s note) and, therefore, in the coming months we will go,” said the head of state. “Our goal is, somewhere in June, with Saudi Arabia, preside over this conference where we could end the mutual recognition movement of many,” he added.

The conference aims to create a Palestinian state. The calls to a “solution to two states”, Palestinian together with that of Israel, have intensified since the beginning of the war in Gaza, caused by the attack against Hamas in Israel on October 7, 2023.

Almost 150 countries recognize the Palestinian State. In May 2024, Ireland, Norway and Spain launched, followed by Slovenia in June. However, the solution of two states remains rejected by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
