After Mayotte, Emmanuel Macron arrived tonight at the meeting on Monday, April 21, the department abroad with the greatest economic growth, in the Chikungunya epidemic and the damage caused by the Garance of the Cyclone.
The Head of State will also reaffirm the “strategic role of the meeting in the Indo-Pacific area”, where France aspires to pose in regional power to the United States, China or India.
The president continues a five -day tour in the southwest of the Indian Ocean that will also take him to Madagascar on Wednesday and Mauricio on Friday.
In Mayotte, he announced on Monday an envelope of more than three billion euros for six years to finance the “recast” plan of the poorest department in France, bruised by the Chido cyclone in December.
Difficulties against Chikungunya
The meeting is shaken by an epidemic of Chikungunya, an infectious disease transmitted by the Tiger mosquito, which has left six dead since the beginning of the year and potentially affected 100,000 people, or one in new residents.
Emmanuel Macron will be informed of the last developments in the epidemic, which has reached its maximum point in recent days, during an exchange with the Regional Health Agency.
The difficulties in this front are still palpable. The general director of the Center of the Hospital Reunion, Lionel Caleng, requested the sending of medical reinforcements against the risk of saturation of health centers.
“Every day for several weeks, we welcome between 30 and 40 patients with ‘Chik’ in our two emergency services”, which generates “great tension in our capabilities,” he warned on Sunday.
At the beginning of April, the Chu had activated the White Plan, a device that allows certain operations to deprogram or remember the license staff in hospitals.
Cyclone Garance generated almost 250 million euros in damages
A vaccination campaign was also launched on April 7. The first 40,000 doses of the IXCHIQ vaccine, the first one that obtained a marketing authorization in Europe, are intended for people 65 years or more with comorbidities. They can be vaccinated for free.
Another challenge for the meeting is the approval of Cyclone Garance on February 28, generated almost 250 million euros in damages, including 150 only for the agricultural sector, according to the first reports.
Already beaten by a severe drought, all agricultural sectors of the island, the sugar cane that represent 53% of the agricultural area, were strongly affected by the winds and rains of the garance, which left five dead.
At the same time, last year, the Bilal cyclone had already put the productions of the island, two cyclones in two years that testify to the increase and intensification of these meteorological phenomena.
“Regional Space”
The Head of State will meet on the morning of the farmers, while the island is self -sufficient in three quarters. Food sovereignty will be in the heart of the fifth summit of the Indian Ocean Commission on Thursday in Madagascar.
The meeting is represented there next to Madagascar, Mauricio, Comoros and Seychelles, but not to Mayotte, the Comoros oppose the integration of the archipelago into the organization due to colonial litigation.
“The president wants through this visit to illustrate the fact that the regional scale is the means of surviving better, of a better preparation to face these climatic elements,” summarizes the elysée.
“This regional space must organize with all its territories and there is a common future to build,” says the French presidency. Emmanuel Macron will also take a balance of the state of the Economy of Meetings.
