Marcelo and the incident in Poland: “We are further away from the risk of an escalation of the conflict”

The President of the Portuguese Republic was calm this Wednesday with NATO’s explanation of the incident involving a missile that landed in Poland and again called for peace in the conflict between Russia and Ukraine.

“If the assessment currently made is confirmed, we would fortunately be further removed from the risk of an escalation of the conflict, which would mean a deterioration of the existing war situation”said Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa to journalists, on the sidelines of the centenary of José Saramago, in Mafra.

For the President of the Republic, “regardless of whether the missile came from A, B or C, it was fundamental that the one who started the war ceased to conduct war operations so that the possibility of moving towards peace could be studied” .

North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg assured this Wednesday that the Atlantic Alliance is “prepared” for incidents like the one in Poland, and urged the Allies to mobilize more air support for Ukraine .

After admitting that the explosion that killed two people in Poland was “probably caused” by a Ukrainian missile, noting that “it is not Ukraine’s fault”, NATO’s Secretary General assured that the Atlantic Alliance air defense systems “are made to defend against attack at all times”.

Polish President Andrzej Duda admitted on Wednesday that the missile that killed two people in Poland on Tuesday was “launched by Ukraine”, but said there was no indication that it was a “deliberate attack”.

Andrzej Duda stated that Poland will not invoke NATO’s Article 4, which provides for consultations between allies when the “territorial integrity, political independence or security” of any member of the Atlantic Alliance is threatened.

The war in Ukraine was caused by Russia on February 24 this year when it invaded the neighboring country.

The conflict plunged Europe into what is considered the most serious security crisis since World War II (1939-1945).
