Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot, “firmly convicted”, on Tuesday, May 6, the “Conquest” plan of the Gaza Strip provided by the Israeli government on Tuesday.
“It is a very firm conviction because it is contrary to international law,” he told RTL microphone.
The Israeli war cabinet on Monday approved a plan that provides “the conquest of the Gaza Strip and the control of the territories,” according to an official source. This extension of military operations will require “the displacement of the majority of the population of the Gaza Strip” outside the combat areas, said General Brigade Effi Defrin, spokesman for the Israeli army.
Jean-Noël Barrot repeated that “the urgency is the high fire” but also “access without obstacles to humanitarian aid” in the Gaza Strip, while the “risk of famine is real.”
“And then, it is the launch of Hamas’s hostages, of course,” he added, pointing out the “extremely strong responsibility” of the Palestinian Islamist movement.
A call to respect “the law of war”
“Even if there is war, we respect a certain number of rules. We do not attack civilians, we do not attack humanitarian workers, we ensure that humanitarian aid can always achieve the populations that need it,” the minister listed.
He called to “return the colors that for a long time was subject to strict respect on the part of the international community”: “The law of war”, “the protection of the most vulnerable in conflict theaters.”
If the Chief of French diplomacy said that “the very deep trauma should not be underestimated” caused by the unprecedented attack of October 7 of Hamas against Israel, he considered that “he is not offending the Israeli people to say that this government is in a clear offense with international law.”
The Gaza Strip, including almost all the inhabitants have already been transferred several times since the beginning of the war, has been the subject of a hermetic block for Israel since March 2. The United Nations continues alert to humanitarian disaster and the risk of famine to which the 2.4 million inhabitants of Gaza are exposed. On Monday, the UN Secretary General, Antonio Guterres, said he was “alarmed” by the Israeli plan.
The Israeli retaliation campaign left at least 52,567 dead in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to data from the Ministry of Hamas, considered reliable by the UN.
