BE asks minister to hear about “complaints of unauthorized acts” by PSP and GNR members

BE called for an urgent parliamentary hearing with the Interior Minister this Thursday following allegations from a journalistic inquiry that members of the PSP and GNR have posted racist and xenophobic messages on social networks.

This is stated by BE in a request to the Lusa agency “Many of the reported behaviors actually constitute the practice of crimes such as discrimination and incitement to hatred and violence, threats, incitement to collective disobedience, coercion against institutional bodies, defamation, discrimination on the basis of race and religion, incitement to violently alter the rule of law, including incitement to collective disobedience”🇧🇷

“If confirmed, the reported conduct of members of the security forces for inciting hatred and posing an explicit threat to the safety of third parties takes on immense seriousness and constitutes a gross and flagrant violation of the law, the Constitution and an affront to State law”says the party.

A consortium of investigative journalists has released a report by Pedro Coelho, Filipe Teles, Cláudia Marques Santos and Paulo Pena on SIC, Setenta e Quatro, Expresso and Público, showing that social networks are being used to do what the law and internal regulations prohibit, based on over 3,000 publications by GNR soldiers and PSP operatives over the years.

for BE, “Any unauthorized behavior by members of the security forces is absolutely unacceptable, under penalty of jeopardizing the trust and credibility of a basic institution of the state, which by law has a monopoly on the use of force.”🇧🇷

For this reason, the blockades call for the urgent hearing of José Luís Carneiro in the Committee on Constitutional Affairs, Rights, Freedoms and Guarantees “concerning reports of unauthorized acts committed by members of the PSP and GNR”🇧🇷

After Lusa reported this request, BE deputy Mariana Mortágua spoke to journalists in parliament about this matter, assuming that, if these allegations are confirmed, it is “a serious problem and a structural problem of infiltration by the far right, from its hateful language and violence in the security forces in Portugal”.

“We understand that this is a worrying subject and that it deserves an explanation from the Interior Minister, who must explain to the country, for the sake of the credibility of the security forces and also its other components and agents, what it is that it is of plan is to do to address this problem”defended.

Faced with the Chega leader’s position on this issue, Mariana Mortágua considered it a “huge hypocrisy”.

“André Ventura was part of the PSD who cut police salaries and is now pretending that racism is a form of political demand from the police. I don’t believe that. I think most security forces are not racist, they are not.” commit crimes and it is clear that if there is a minority, even expressive, that does this, it calls into question the credibility of the security forces”he claimed.

For the blockade delegate, one should not “take the part for the whole, but it is important to ensure that the government has zero tolerance for this type of crime”.

On Wednesday it was announced that the General Inspectorate of the Internal Administration will open an investigation into the veracity of the news that refers to the publication by security forces officers of posts on social networks with discriminatory content and incitement to hatred.

A note from the office of the Minister of Internal Administration said that José Luís Carneiro ordered the General Inspectorate of Internal Administration (IGAI) to “open immediately an investigation to determine the veracity of the evidence in today’s news. [quarta-feira] about the alleged publication, by security forces agents, of posts on social networks with discriminatory content, inciting hatred and violence against certain people”.
