“A historical moment for the Catholic Church”: Emmanuel Macron greets the choice of Leon XIV

After the election of Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost as Pope, the President of the Republic declared for the “new pontificate to have peace and hope.”

Shortly after the first appearance of the sovereign pontiff on the balcony of the Basilica Saint-Pierre this Thursday, May 8, Emmanuel Macron sent a “fraternal message” to the new Pope Leo XIV and “to all Catholics in France and the world.”

So this is celebrated this Thursday the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II in Europe and the victory of the allies over the axis forces, the President of the Republic begged that the “new pontificate was the bearer of peace and hope.”

Bruno Retailleau “is associated with the joy of Catholics”

The French head of state also praised a “historical moment for the Catholic Church and its millions of faithful” after the election of the American Robert Francis Prevost, the first Pope of the United States in history.

“Father of French origin, mother of Italian origin, American of Chicago, twenty years in Peru, then in Rome, taking the name of León, potato of the poor and workers: for a billion and a half million believers, a hope of peace and fraternity that crosses the borders,” Prime Minister François Bayrou reacted.
