The President of the Republic spoke this Thursday during a commemoration ceremony of the 80th anniversary of German capitulation during World War II.

Before the return of the “spectrum of the war” in the European continent, “we will never end up defending peace,” said Emmanuel Macron on Thursday, May 8 in the commemorations of the 80th anniversary of the capitulation of Nazi Germany in Paris.

Eight decades after the end of World War II in Europe, the French president warned: “We will never finish fighting for victory.”

“And we will never have finished defending peace. We will never have finished. And if some people thought, in recent years in Europe and in the world they have reminded us,” he continued, during a speech at the foot of the Arc de Triunfo.

While the war libra by Russia in Ukraine extended for more than three years, Emmanuel Macron pointed out the illusion that was the idea of ​​”perpetual peace” in the continent, born after the conflict.

“Defend our independence, our freedom”

Because “in recent years”, Europeans have seen “reappear the spectrum of war, re -emerge the imperialisms and totalitarian behavior” and “again mocked the law of nations,” deplored the head of state.

In this sense, “we will never have finished affirming the place of our country, of the ideals he uses, to defend our independence, our freedom and a stronger Europe,” he launched.

Emmanuel Macron also recalled that France, after five years of Nazi occupation, had to win among the allies in the winning table 80 years ago by signing the capitulation of the third Reich in Reims.

“We knew that I had a role to play, this country, our old country, in the dialogue of powers, the balance of the world and the stability of the future. And where its flag floated, there also floated a certain idea of ​​man,” the president presented.

During the ceremony, for which Ecuadorian President Daniel Nnovera was invited, Emmanuel Macron presented the gentleman’s badge of the Lead of Honor to Jean Daikhowski, a resistance figure that participated especially in the release of Paris, after having escaped from Roundup Vel d’Viv in 1942.
