Betharram: Spillet-Vannier, the unlikely duo who works with a good understanding of the head of the Investigation Commission

The deputy of LFI and his colleague of the Renaissance are the co-porters of the Investigation Commission that will question François Bayrou this Wednesday, May 14 about the case of physical and sexual violence at the Bétharram Notre-Dame University.

Paul Vannier and Violette Spillet? They will not go on vacation together, one is a deputy of France Rebelde (LFI), the other of the Renaissance and the two are the regular county of the opposite field. However, they work with each other, each of which is co-recorting of the Commission for Investigation on Violence in Schools that François Bayrou must audition this Wednesday, May 14, with the Betharram scandal in the background.

The set offers an unlikely duo, called to work together on a highly flammable topic. If the renaissance-live pairs have already worked cordially, this collaboration was not obvious on paper.

Paul Vannier, 39, does not have hard words for Macronie, guilty according to him to have “finished his mute in a conservative right, open to Lepenist ideas.” Violette Spillet, 52, does well. So close to Gérald Darmanin accused in the past the radical left movement of “mocking the values of our republic.”

However, the two parliamentarians report a real understanding, in the field as in the hearing, to a draft common future law. “As sincerely as I want to avoid another Betharram,” Paul Vannier told AFP, while his colleague explained: “There is real confidence, without naivety.”

Vannier, specialist in education and rebel strategist

The first, son of a father of the union of FO in EDF and mother of music teacher at primary school is completely successful with the “Melencño”. Both basically and in strategy. When entering politics in the left party in 2008, he joined LFI and contributed to the education program.

Paul Vannier also forged a reputation as a rude negotiator during the creations of the new popular, ecological and social union in 2022 and the new popular front in 2024.

“Vannier is good. You must be careful with this very intelligent character who knows his file very well,” said an AFP macronista frame. On the investigation commission “it is serious, applied, struggle,” acknowledges the deputy of PS Emmanuel Grégoire.

The former members of LFI are more hard, judge the brutal rebel, or accusing him of having threatened not to reinvest the agents that are too speaking in the press, that Paul Vannier firmly denies. “It has never happened,” he insists, arguing that opening decisions are always collegially taken.

Some macronists accuse him of wanting to instrumentalize the Investigation Commission to “knock down François Bayrou”. “Those who venture in these comments participate in an omerta climate that I suppose to fight,” replies to the deputy, stressing that the commission is not limited to Betharram.

On the other hand, it is undoubtedly an opportunity for LFI: “We show that we are seriously the substance,” observes the coordinator of the Bompard manual movement, greeting a job “in good intelligence”, with Violette Spillet.

Spilalle, northern deputy “raised in a teacher of teachers”

Public Health Engineer, the latter worked for more than 15 years at the City of Lille, with Pierre Mauroy and then Martine Aubry, which left in “deep disagreements” in 2013.

Approved by several management positions at the SNCF, he continued his political career in Macronie, in particular in the Assembly in 2022 and then in 2024. Daughter of a professor of the Superior Institute of Agronomy of Lille and a French professor, worked in particular in the state of the elected official, the press or education in the media.

“I was raised in the environment of a teacher. When I was a teenager, I always said:” I will never be a teacher, “but in the end I have always attracted these subjects,” I will rewind the deputy, a time scheduled in the Ministry of Education.

“He is a square, solid,” he welcomed a macronist minister, interviewed by AFP, while a government manager wants to be critical. “She talks a lot, she’s frustrated because she couldn’t have entered the government.”

The elected official explains that he was interested in violence at school after a meeting in the constituency.

“A gentleman told me that he was one of the victims of the village of Riaumont (traditionalist Catholic community in the heart of several surveys) and that he had managed to flee. Therefore, I began to be interested in the subject,” he explains.

And the one who will try to take the City Council of Lille again in 2026 to defend the comments of the field: “In my constituency (the Research Commission) is one of the first things that people tell me. They say ‘Bravo, has managed to leave their differences aside for such an important issue’.”
