Emmanuel Macron said Thursday that he had “exchanged for the first time with Pope Leo XIV” by phone, with whom “he approached the efforts to be carried out to silence the weapons wherever the conflicts are unbridled in the world, especially for solid and lasting peace in Ukraine and Gaza.”
“We share the ambition to reconcile the fight against poverty and the protection of the planet,” added the French head of state in a message posted in X.
Emmanuel Macron finally writes that France “will always be together with those who work for peace and dialogue between peoples.”
The President of the Republic had gone to the funeral of Pope Francis, who died on April 21 of a stroke. He had congratulated the election of Pope Leo XIV on May 8, evoking a “historical moment for the Catholic Church.”
