Macron’s “joke” in Asia: the French are “a bit arrogant”, “but we doubt a lot”

On a trip to Thailand, the president judged that “we doubt ourselves a lot”, “sometimes too probably”. Elíseo assures BFMTV that his comments were “a joke”, without “innuendo”.

A new “macronada” of which the president has the secret? Emmanuel Macron gave the vision of his fellow citizens this Thursday night from Bangkok, at the summit of the leaders of Apec, the forum for economic cooperation for Asia-Pacific. From Thailand, after referring to the “many assets” that France has, the president added: “Certainly, the French are very proud, sometimes perhaps a little small, even a little arrogant.”

“We doubt ourselves a lot”

“We doubt ourselves a lot, sometimes too probably. However, I think we can be confident in our future because France has a lot of assets to fight in this world and achieve results.”

The presidential candidate had deplored during the presidential campaign the analysis of the small sentences that he pronounced during his five-year term and that sometimes shocked the French.

“One thing that matters to me: do no harm”

From “those who are nothing”, to “I cross the street and find you a job”, to his desire to “piss off” those not vaccinated against Covid-19, his first term was dotted with statements that damaged his public image.

“When we put it in context, familiarity does not mean provocation. But there is one thing that matters to me and that is not to hurt,” Emmanuel Macron told readers of Ebra group newspapers, including Le Dauphine Liberé last April during the presidential campaign.

The head of state then admitted only one regret: his words as Minister of Economy to the “illiterate” employees of the GAD group.

“A joke”

Proof of the Élysée’s willingness to avoid any new controversy: the president’s entourage has put the statements made in Bangbok into perspective.

“It was a joke. She spoke of the need to understand and interact between the French and Asian cultures. There were really no hints,” one of his relatives tells BFMTV.

“It was a point-blank comment. He was referring to a perception of the French abroad, but it is not a value judgment ”, the presidency also advances.
