A bill backed by Laurent Wauquiez to reject the proportional in the Constitution

Last week, Prime Minister François Bayrou announced that he would propose to the National Assembly to examine the issue of a change in electoral mode in France. Republicans, government members, oppose fiercely.

A bill was presented this Wednesday, May 28, aimed at “registering in the Constitution the majority of the two round elections for the legislative elections and against the proportional.” It was the deputy Les Républicins Alexandre Portier who deposited him.

At the end of next week, there will be a second deposit with the list of all co-firming favorable to this proposal. “We are in a mobilization phase to have a maximum of a joint signature,” said Alexandre Portier.

And he has already received size support since Laurent Wauquiez, president of the appropriate Republican group in the National Assembly, is one of the co-firming.

“Exploit the central block”?

Alexandre Portier assures it: it is not a matter of duplicate Bruno Retailleau on the subject. “We vote unanimously in office with Bruno Retilleau about these questions. We are no longer in the elections of Lr. We are representative of Gaullist Heritage,” he said.

The current Interior Minister already said that he opposed the establishment of a proportional voting system in France. In particular, it must be received on Monday by François Bayrou to discuss this issue.

But in the entourage of Bruno Retailleau, this bill, co-firmed by Laurent Wauquiez, does not perceive well. The idea is to “exploit the central block and not give way to Bruno Retailleau,” the entourage of those who became president of the Republicans on May 18 reacted, after having defeated Laurent Wauquiez.

A voting mode that “would create many problems”

“The idea is to go to the offensive so as not to impose itself on a proportional that creates many problems,” said Alexandre Portier’s side.

“We want to remain in the line of the founding parents of the Constitution: Michel debré, René Cassin …”, added the deputy of the Rhône.

The objective is to defeat the initiative presented by François Bayrou in favor of a change in the legislative voting system. Since the end of April, the Prime Minister has begun proportional consultations, receiving party leaders and presidents of the parliamentary group represented in the National Assembly. In BFMTV last week, he announced that “He would offer the National Assembly to examine this question”.

A “crumbled” risk of the common base

“LR and horizons are unfavorable for the proportional. It is half of the common base. François Bayrou will have to listen to us. Otherwise, participate in the collapse of their base,” he also commented on the entourage of Vincent Jeanbrun, deputy of Val-de-Marne.

“Because we are a government party, we refuse to support a voting system that will make the country even more ungovernable,” LR’s political office said in a statement published Wednesday.

“Therefore, the Republicans will launch with all their strength in this battle against the proportional,” they insisted.

For his part, François Bayrou praised the “pluralism” he said, the proportional choice. However, he says that it is favorable to an advantage in the force reached the upper part of the elections.
