A political earthquake that always leaves traces. Almost a year after the dissolution of the National Assembly, Emmanuel Macron formulates regrets, he learned the gallery on Sunday, June 8, when today’s political situation seems at least so harmful.
“In the secret of our conversations, it should be better before after the solution,” said a close friend of the president to our colleagues.
Already, during his wishes to the French on the occasion of the New Year, Emmanuel Macron publicly admitted a possible error. “The dissolution has brought more divisions to the Assembly at the moment than the solutions for the French,” he said.
“Lucidity and humility to recognize that at this time, this decision has produced more instability than Serenity and I take my whole part,” he added, however, “to avoid the immobility it threatened.”
A choice defended as “clarification time”
When he announced the dissolution of the Assembly, he decided after the defeat of the presidential camp in the European elections, said Emmanuel Macron, in June 2024, a “serious and heavy” decision, but first praised “an act of trust” with the French.
This solution was also, according to Emmanuel Macron’s expression, constituting an “essential clarification time”, while the assembly only had a relative majority.
However, the legislative elections organized in the process only led to an assembly divided into three large blocks, with 182 seats won by the elected officials of the new popular front, 168 by the presidential camp and 143 by the RN and the allies LR of the RN, of the 577 that the lower house of the Parliament has the party of Emmanuel Macron.
A year later, the French are circumspects, since 7 out of 10 (71%) judge that it was “a bad decision”, a figure of 6 points in a year.
Possible referendums mentioned
The president of the president, Brigitte Macron, had tried last January to defend the dissolution determined by her husband, in the middle of the launch campaign for the operation of yellow pieces.
“He knows why he did it, but he also listens to what they tell him. To drive, it’s not simple. But you have to choose a path, he chose a path because he thinks that giving the floor to the French, is always good,” he supported RTL.
On December 31, Emmanuel Macron announced that he intended to ask the French in 2025 to “decide” “determine the subjects”, which suggests possible referendums.
Since then, François Bayrou has proposed a referendum on public finances, however, the welcome with the circumspection of Emmanuel Macron, without saying not if the vote is related to a “plan” of economic and social reforms, while recalling that “the tax, the budget” falls under the competition of Parliament.
A new solution is not expected
Exactly one year and a day after the second round of the legislative elections, the president will once again have the possibility of dissolving the assembly on July 8.
Emmanuel Macron, however, said at the end of April that “he had never considered” dissolve the National Assembly once again, challenging the information reported by the Bloomberg news agency.
“I certainly made mistakes, I did things that were not understood. This is undoubtedly the case of dissolution,” he acknowledged before the press.
