Supervisor killed in Nogent: Cost, efficiency … Is the installation of doors against knives in school possible?

After the death of an education assistant on Monday in Haute-Marne, François Bayrou asks for the installation of porches to detect metals in certain schools. However, the measurement seems difficult to configure, starting with its cost.

A song released by François Bayrou. After the death of an education assistant, killed by a 14 -year -old schoolboy armed with a knife this Tuesday, June 10, the prime minister asked for “the experiment” of the metal weapons detection porch, “like those we have at airports, in any case in educational establishments in which there is disorder” in TF1 this Tuesday night.

But the measure would awaken many difficulties, as explained by Elisabeth Borne, the Minister of National Education.

• How would you see?

The porches already exist in certain establishments, as in the secondary schools of the Auverne-Rhône-Alpes region, launched by Laurent Wauquiez when he was the president. However, these porches that come in the form of a tourniquet do not seek to ensure that students do not wear knives, but avoid any intrusion in schools.

Specifically, students and evil school staff and, therefore, can return to the university or the high school student. The high school in Arras, where Professor Dominique Bernard was killed by a former student in 2023, is, for example, now equipped.

This is another formula that in mind François Bayrou with the installation of porches capable of detecting metal, as in airports. It currently does not exist in any establishment in France.

“If we want to do this seriously, it will take a porch on the one hand under which we would pass and next to an X carpet -ray to put its backpack or bag,” explains Christian Flaesch, former director of the Judicial Police of Paris with BFMTV.

• How would it cost?

The prices of the porches are very variable, around 1,000 euros begin and can increase to 10,000 euros in sales sites specialized in security equipment. As for the X -Ray carpets, its cost is 5,000 euros for the first models of around 50,000 for the most efficient models.

On paper, this amount could be paid by departments that are in charge of maintaining universities and regions for secondary schools, with a cost that could cost quickly in millions of euros.

Only in île-de-France, for example, there are 474 public secondary schools that would probably need at least three pig metal detectors and three X-ray scanners to avoid the effects of crowds at the entrance of schools. The attached Horizons Naïma Mouthou, who made a report at the end of May on white weapons and minors appear on this device on average in “200,000 euros” per establishment.

At this price, the question of the price of personnel that would seek in the bags and the students in case of detection of knives must also be added.

No member of the educational teams, whether teachers, management or supervisors, can do so legally. Therefore, the gendarmes or the police must be present at the site every day to control the establishments equipped daily. Since March, the police have proceeded to 6,200 random excavations in schools.

Another possibility: use private companies, as is the case at airports.

“We should potentially resort to teams that would be there early in the morning and then all day, potentially from 7:45 am to 5 pm

“All this makes very important amounts, either in the end backed by the State or local authorities,” this former head of the National Gendarmerie Research Institute still analyzes.

At the moment, this device does not exist and is not planned by the legal framework.

• Would it be effective?

If the establishments were massively equipped with porch carpets and X -rays for backpacks and would find the means for these controls to be effective, they would still be measured.

The Minister of National Education, Elisabeth Borne, has already expressed his doubts. With metal detectors, “we have ceramic knives who will not be detected, “said former prime minister on Wednesday in France Inter.

Another interrogation: establishments that would be equipped with him. François Bayrou mentioned in TF1 the case of universities and secondary schools “where there is disorder”. But neither the Nantes High School nor that of Nogent, where the supervisor was killed on Monday was in the radars of national education. The two establishments are considered very quiet, without any particular problem.

“The reality is that when a student wants to bring a weapon, it is successful to throw it on a grid, using another entrance, without going through the device,” says the naïma mouthou attachments.

In its report on minors and white weapons, the installation of metal detectors does not appear as a solution. Instead of the porches, the parliamentarian asks for the generalization of video surveillance near schools in a mandatory way, as well as an experimentation of videos protection within the establishments, after the authorization of the Board of Directors of the establishment.
