PCP leader says Marcelo fulfilled “obligations” in “his own style”.

The PCP secretary-general defended that the president of the republic has tried to “fulfill the constitutional obligations”, “in his own way”, and warns those who think they have “the government in their hands” that he can do “whatever he wants with it”.

In an interview with TSF Radio and Jornal de Notícias, released this Sunday, the PCP’s new secretary general, Paulo Raimundo, says that Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa “tried to exercise his mandate within the objectives and balances he deems useful.”, pointing to the many political and ideological disagreements that separate the communists from the head of state.

“There are people who characterize [o mandato] as well as successive favors to the government and even holding the government. Whoever controls a government will make of it what he understands at any time,” he warned.

However, when asked if the PCP has this understanding, Paulo Raimundo replied in the negative: “No, no, there are those who characterize it that way”.

“Regardless of the differences we have, I think that the President of the Republic has tried to fulfill the constitutional obligations enshrined in him, in a very unique style, which can sometimes even cause embarrassment,” he added, denying that this is a compliment, but a fact that “there is a regular operation that is mandatory for the institutions”.

PCP will not stir up controversy

In the same interview, Paulo Raimundo, who succeeded Jerónimo de Sousa as PCP secretary general a week ago, also assures that the party will not “feed the controversy” around the government’s successive cases, which he says are “a quagmire that it deeply discredits political life and the democratic regime” which usually “does not produce good results”.

“We will also not shy away from saying what we think about this case, but we see things happening with great concern, but also this total discrediting of the institutions. This idea that they are all the same and that they are all here buttoning up is very dangerous,” he said, defending that the issues should be “promptly investigated, assessed if necessary and appropriate consequences withdrawn”.
