The PS parliamentary leader accuses the PSD of refraining from the budget debate and presenting proposals that are “mere pamphlets”, but shows openness to dialogue with all opposition parties except Chega.
“The main opposition party did not want to talk about the state budget. (…) The main opposition party, now led by Dr. Luís Montenegro, is a party that has essentially refrained from the budget debate”accuses Eurico Brilhante Dias in the Socialist Party podcast “Politics with Word”, released this Thursday.
The party chairman of the PS states that since the start of the national budget debate for 2023, the social democrats “a position that is not only one of criticism, but one of withdrawing from the budget discussion”who accused the PSD of announcing the vote against the government’s proposal “even before knowing the document”.
In the opinion of Eurico Brilhante Dias, faced with a budget that “supports the income of the Portuguese” and provides a “right accounts policy”, the PSD has “apparently no alternative” to present.
“The PSD is a party that wants to be a government again and clearly, looking at this government’s options, (…) alongside that ongoing push to reduce the IRC for everyone and for all companies – that’s kind of a mantra which he repeats every time he wants to talk about economic options – it’s a party with no alternative”criticized.
Continuing the criticism of the Social Democrats, Brilhante Dias argues that the proposals submitted by the PSD in the context of the budget debate “they come in the wake of a pamphlet policy, which is the political option Dr Luís Montenegro currently has, but which is a pamphlet policy that has no political content”🇧🇷
“If we look at the PPD/PSD proposals – of which more than 200 have been made – (…) they are proposals that are just pamphlets, without us being able to have a real budgetary alternative”argues.
Brilhante Dias states that precisely because she has no alternative to present it “the right, and in particular the PPD/PSD and Dr Luís Montenegro, are betting on a policy of ‘business and affairs’ against the government”🇧🇷
“When it comes to discussing the budget, they preferred to discuss other topics, some of which were denied within a few days, such as the case of incompatibilities, than the case of electrical connections. Small cases that appear and which are dismantled later, but which create sound media, that is a fact”he says.
Despite this criticism of the PSD, Brilhante Dias shows openness to “look at proposals from other democratic parties” – excluding Chega, without ever explicitly mentioning it – and welcomes those who can “improve the budget”.
In concrete terms, the party chairman of the PS points out that his party will make a “careful analysis” of the proposals of the PAN in the field of environment and animal welfare, of Livre on student housing and of the proposals of the Liberal for higher education.
Brilhante Dias also commits to “looking closely” at Autonomous Region PSD proposals as well as “corporate support and even support from the media”.
With regard to the PCP and Bloco de Esquerda, the party leader of the PS states that his party will look at the proposals “in the context of the labor market, workers’ rights, the defense of the SNS and public education”stating that these are areas where socialists “share visions and even political options with the parliamentary left”.
“I would like to see proposals passed by opposition parties that would allow us to have a more open, inclusive budget with everyone’s participation”underlined.
