The Republicans decided, not surprisingly. The former head of Government of Michel Barnier was elected, almost unanimously, this Monday, July 28 by the National Investiment Commission (CNI) of the party to represent them in the partial legislative in the second district of Paris. A formalization that sounds like the beginning of a fratricidal war.
At the polls, the Minister of Culture of the same Rachida Dati party will be opposed, who announced a dissident candidacy the same day. She assured that “whatever happens” will be presented with this election scheduled for October. The mayor of the seventh district of the capital accuses Michel Barnier of presenting himself to serve “presidential ambitions.”
Michel Barnier, ephemeral prime minister, was a candidate on July 15, a few days after the decision of the Constitutional Council to declare that Jean Laussucq macronist is not eligible.
“It’s not just a matter of personality”
The president of the Republicans and Interior Minister, Bruno Retailleau, had supported the Savoyard even before the formalization of its inauguration. “It is no longer just a matter of personality but of balance,” he said.
In other LRS, the Savoyard strategy, which feeds presidential ambitions, arouses questions. A party manager suspects him “to run for the presidency of the group of deputies”, currently occupied by Laurent Wauquiez.
These divisions could delight left. Rachida Dati had created surprise last year by achieving the second round in this constituency, which for a long time is considered “unmissable” on the right. Socialists must choose their candidate in the next few days.
As for Thierry Mariani, former Minister of Nicolas Sarkozy, passed in the national rally, also affirms this constituency that covers a large part of the luxury, sixth and seventh and seventh group districts and that presents as “the place to be.”
