Bullfight: Fabien Roussel will vote “against his ban”

The general secretary of the PCF opposes the abolition of bullfighting, which is the subject of a bill from the LFI. He judges that other texts presented by the rebels during their parliamentary niche on Thursday should be debated as a priority when not all of them can be examined due to lack of time.

Fabien Roussel will vote against the abolition of bullfighting in France on Thursday, during the parliamentary niche of La France Insoumise (LFI) in the National Assembly. Asked about BFMTV-RMC, the general secretary of the French Communist Party (PCF) judges that this practice deserves “a real debate and not a ban”.

If he says that he does not defend bullfighting, Fabien Roussel underlines what “is behind” this practice: “The relationship between man and animal, [celui] between man and food”, but also “painters, artists who have investigated this question”.

In the Law Commission last Wednesday, the communist deputy Pierre Dhareville had estimated that “the question is whether or not you like bullfighting.” But rather to “know if the Republic is justified in prohibiting this cultural practice, if one worldview can prohibit another.” The deputy-elect of Bouches-du-Rhône had thus indicated that he did not share the “anti-speciesist horizon” of deputy Aymeric Caron, champion of this bill on bullfighting.

If he points out that among the 12 bills that LFI intends to present during its parliamentary niche, some are “very interesting”, Fabien Roussel points to the “level of importance” given to these texts.

For him, it is necessary to defend above all the “constitutionalization of abortion”, the “SMIC at 1600 euros”, the guarantee of an “AESH statute” (Accompaniment of students with disabilities)”, “the reinsertion of unvaccinated caregivers” . or even “a public drinking water service”.

“Priority”

The deputy from the North considers that the ban on bullfighting is not a “priority”, “in view of what the French are experiencing today.” This question of “priorities” arises because certain texts not presented could not be debated before the end of the parliamentary day at midnight.

That of bullfighting occupies fourth place on the agenda set by the LFI, behind the bill to create a commission of investigation of Uber Files, the increase in the minimum wage to 1600 euros and the inscription of the right to abortion in the Constitution . These three texts received respectively 26, 110 and 233 amendments. Which seriously jeopardizes the chances that Aymeric Caron’s text will be examined until the end, but also the ones that follow. Especially since it received 577 amendments, more than the other 11 texts.

Meanwhile, Fabien Roussel has already thrown a stone into the water. Referring to the reinsertion of unvaccinated caregivers, he said: “Imagine if this text does not pass because before there would be bullfights. It would be terrible for these caregivers who are waiting for such a measure.” This bill is placed in the 5th position on the agenda. Right behind… the bullfighting one.
