The Minister of Culture Rachida Dati, whose objective is the City of Paris in 2026, announced this Saturday, August 23, the maintenance of his candidacy for the partial legislative in the 2nd District of Paris against former Prime Minister Michel Barnier, however, invested by his party Les Républicins.
“The legislative election that will take place in my constituency of districts 5, 6 and 7 will be the first stage of the meeting and the dynamics of victory in Paris (…) I invite the political forces of the law and the center to assume their responsibilities. From now on, I suppose that mine and I will do it, I will do it in an interview in the gallery on Sunday, despite the legal profits.
The mayor of LR of the seventh district did not appreciate the candidacy of Michel Barnier, who considers “instrumentalized”, in this constituency where the choice of the macronista attachment Jean Laussucq was invalidated by the Constitutional Council for irregularities in his campaign accounts. The election must be held on September 21 and 28.
“An unprecedented crisis”
At the end of July, the president of the LR Federation of Paris Agnès Evrencs still hoped to find an agreement “at the beginning of the school year” with Rachida Dati to avoid a fratricidal war.
It was without counting the desire to fight from Rachida Dati. “I introduce myself to the votes of the Parisians for a single goal: to win Paris and return to the Parisians the city they deserve,” he told The Weekly, believing that Paris “lives an unprecedented crisis.”
“Today we have the historical opportunity to pass this page. We have a solid project, elected officials located in all districts and energy to transform our capital,” he adds, asking “to unite all the law forces and the center around a common project.”
Excluded from Republicans in 2024 after being recruited in January 2024 by Gabriel Attal to enter his government as Minister of Culture, Rachida Dati took over his card in LR.
A LEGAL AGENDA LOAD
For its part, Michel Barnier hit at the beginning of August in early August to not be “candidate for anything other than delegation.”
To this electoral agenda, Rachida Dati, 59, must correspond to its legal agenda: it was fired on July 22 in trial for corruption and influence of traffic, suspected of having received 900,000 euros between 2010 and 2012 for advice services with a subsidiary of the Renault-Nissan alliance, but without really working, while I was a European lawyer and demanding.
She appealed the decision. The precise date of the trial must be established at a first hearing scheduled for September 29.
