Chega has withdrawn political confidence from Sintra’s elected alderman, Nuno Afonso, claiming that the mayor disrespected political indications by making the 2023 municipal budget feasible, the party announced on Wednesday.
“The Political Commission of the Lisbon District will today send a letter to the Sintra City Council stating that, with immediate effect, Councilor Nuno Afonso will no longer represent the Chega Party in that municipality’s executive body,” said Lisbon’s Chega District. in a statement. posted on social media.
The budget of the Sintra Chamber for 2023, amounting to 315 million euros, was approved on Tuesday with the favorable votes of the PS (four councilors plus the chairman), of the CDU councilor, the abstention of the councilor of Chega and the votes against PSD and CDS-PP (four councillors).
“His vote, despite the party’s directives and the strategy set for the district, are clear acts of party indiscipline and leave this district’s political committee no choice but to immediately withdraw political confidence in Councilor Nuno Afonso.” , reads the Note.
Nuno Afonso was André Ventura’s chief of staff, as the party’s only deputy, in the last legislature, having been reappointed at the beginning of the new legislature (on March 29 this year).
However, he would be acquitted almost a month later (May 6).
The mayor of Sintra was also deputy chairman of the party until Chega’s third congress, held in Coimbra in May last year, and now assumes the functions of member of the national leadership. He was also not on the lists of candidates for deputies in the parliamentary elections on 30 January.
The leader admitted at the time that he was uncomfortable with the “fall” in the party hierarchy and spoke of “stabbing”.
