BFMTV survey. 82% of the French believe that the current political sequence is “a heartbreaking show”

While François Bayrou looks for a vote of confidence in the National Assembly, on Tuesday, September 8, a large majority of the French believe that the political class “is not up to the situation.”

French disappointed. A few days before a possible resignation of the government, the mental state of the French is very negative in the face of the political situation. According to a new survey of “L’Eninion Live”, proof of an Elabe Institute for BFMTV and published this Wednesday, September 3, more than eight French people (82%) judge that recent political news is “a heartbreaking show given by a political class that is not up to the situation.” Only 17% believe that it is “the normal life of a democracy and a parliament where there is no absolute majority.”

When asked about the words that most describe their mental state in the face of this situation, the French are 64% to cite “concern”, 44% to cite “exasperation” and 42% “anger.” They are only 5% to cite “hope”, “optimism” and “indifference”, and 3% to feel “confidence.”

The future of the government seems to last a thread when all the oppositions have already announced that they would not vote for the confidence that François Bayrou has requested the urgency to absorb the country’s debt.

The prime minister will have, in case of negative voting on September 8, to present the resignation of his government, less than a year after having happened to Michel Barnier, overthrown by a motion of censure in budgetary texts. In the case of a new political blockade, some, the RN in particular, demand a dissolution of the National Assembly.

In this context, public opinion severely considers political officials and elected officials, perceived as ineffective to respond to the country’s problems (for 90%of those questioned), far from their concerns (91%) and without a project for the country (90%).

French very politically divided

Like the National Assembly without the absolute majority, the latest ELABE survey for BFMTV shows that the country is politically very fragmented. 39% of respondents say they do not feel close to any part or do not decide, 20% feel close to the RN, 20% of a left party and 17% of one of the parts of the current government coalition (from the Renaissance to Republicans).

And even if there is only 6% to feel close to the Renaissance, the French interviewees are skeptical about the ability of the oppositions to make it better than Emmanuel Macron if they were in power. The RN raises a little more credit (33% think it would work better, 34% not better no less well and 32% think it would be worse).

“Boomers comfort”, why François Bayrou plays the shock of generations to save their government?

13% think that LR would do it better, 61% neither better nor less well and 24% worse. Figures similar to those of the PS (13% better, 56% neither better nor less well, 29% worse).

In addition, the current opposition is mainly perceived as not very constructive. 73% of respondents believe that Emmanuel Macron’s oppositions are content to criticize and act for their own interest and for electoral reasons. 26% believe they offer alternatives and act in the interest of the country.

Bayrou is denied to be “defeatist”

For his part, the prime minister refuses to be pessimistic about his future. This Wednesday, in RMC-BFMTV, François Bayrou acknowledged that the scenario of his fall was “perhaps realistic”, but added that he refused to be “defeatist”, considering that “possible” does not vote against him. He also repeated that the dissolution of the National Assembly was a “risk” because that of 2024 had caused “otherwise” of the expected “clarifications.”

However, the Head of Government has not made a concession to the Socialists, whom he must receive Thursday morning, in an attempt to reverse his decision to demolish the government, particularly in the abolition of two planned vacations in their public finance recovery plan. He also swept the budget proposals of the PS, which he wants to divide for two next year the effort desired by the prime minister of 44 billion euros.

François Bayrou, on the other hand, seemed to take a step towards the extreme right, confirming the drafts of decrees aimed at reducing the medical care list backed by state medical aid (AME) for foreigners in an irregular situation, a measure claimed by the national concentration. Now he only has four days left to try to save his government.

Sample of 1,001 people, representative of residents of continental France of 18 years or more. The representativeness of the sample was ensured according to the quota method applied to the following variables: sex, age and profession of the interviewee after stratification by region and category of agglomeration. Internet interrogation from September 2 to 3, 2025.
