OE023: Free sees proposal approved for white paper on sex work and prostitution

This Tuesday, Livre saw the approval of a proposal to amend the 2023 state budget so that an independent entity would be tasked with “a white paper on sex work and prostitution” that would identify “needs and regulatory pathways.”

The proposal approved in the specialty on Tuesday provides for the government to order an independent entity next year “a white paper on sex work and prostitution, assessing needs and regulatory pathways, based on comparative law and consultation with various civil society organizations and in particular those representing the people involved in this activity”🇧🇷

The initiative presented by Livre’s sole deputy, Rui Tavares, was approved by the Budget and Finance Committee in Parliament and received a favorable vote from the PS, PSD, BE and Livre, the abstention of the Liberal Initiative and PAN, and the vote against from PCP and Chega.

That’s what the party claims “the reality of sex work and prostitution in Portugal is unknown, with a lack of data, legal but without specific regulations and specialized services”🇧🇷

From Livre’s point of view, “the current state of the art does not protect anyone by not recognizing the rights of these people, but also by not having effective strategies to prevent and combat sexual exploitation”🇧🇷

Recognizing that this can be a complex matter to regulate, but believing in the urgency of this regulation, Livre proposes a white paper on sex work and prostitution for a thorough analysis of the reality and possible avenues for the legislature, the public and the social partners.” entities”is in the proposal.
