“A copy of austerity”: Socialist MP Paul Christophle justifies his choice to vote for censure against his party’s advice

Unlike most of his PS colleagues, Paul Christophle, socialist deputy for Drôme, announced that he will vote on Thursday in favor of censure of the Lecornu government. On BFMTV he explains the reasons for his choice.

Paul Christophle, socialist deputy for Drôme, announced that he will vote in favor of censuring the government against the party’s opinion, denouncing this Wednesday, October 15, on BFMTV, a budgetary policy of “austerity.”

“We accept the debate in Parliament. But what copy do we start from? We start from a copy, from a budget project that is very austere,” criticizes the socialist the day after Sébastien Lecornu’s general policy speech.

Although he hails the “victory” of seeing the pension reform suspended, the elected official claims, on the other hand, “not having heard much” about two other pillars of socialist demands, namely, “fiscal justice and purchasing power.”

“The Prime Minister and the Government have not committed themselves on these two points,” says the socialist on BFMTV.

During his statement on Tuesday, Sébastien Lecornu tried to seduce the Socialist Party, the only political force that still has power over its future after the announcement of censorship by the National Rally, La France Insoumise, the environmentalists and the communists.

The First Secretary of the Socialist Party, Olivier Faure, expressed satisfaction this morning on BFMTV for having obtained “a guarantee” from the Prime Minister with the suspension of the pension reform.

“Have they bought us? Not at all. I will fight from now on step by step and we will see who on the right or the left gets satisfaction.” [sur le budget]”he said on BFMTV.

On Tuesday afternoon, Olivier Faure had already announced that he would not vote in favor of censure against the Government and had asked the socialist deputies to “respect” this collective decision. “Causing a dissolution does not change people’s lives,” he declared on TF1.

Uncertainty about the number of socialists in favor of censorship

Asked about the intentions of his colleagues, Paul Christophle stated that he “does not know” if other socialists will make the same decision as him. “We will see tomorrow who will vote in favor of the motion of censure. The issue is to remember the struggles for which we will vote: fiscal justice and purchasing power,” responded the deputy.

“We ask for a change in policy, but we still see nothing in the method or the approach,” says Paul Christophle on the eve of the no-confidence vote.

On Thursday, the future of Lecornu’s government will surely be decided with a few votes. Will a handful of socialists manage to overthrow the government? Nothing is certain. If each deputy follows the directives of his party, 265 parliamentarians would have to vote in his favor, that is, 46% of the seats in the chamber. Only 24 votes will be needed to overthrow the government of Lecornu II.
