EELV Congress: Marine Tondelier on her way to becoming party leader

Marine Tondelier wants to “gather a million environmental sympathizers by the end of this mandate.” In particular, she has the support of the former national secretary of the party, Julien Bayou.

The Greens will soon meet their future leader. Marine Tondelier is on track to take the lead in Europa Ecologie les Verts, with 46.97% of the votes of the members collected in her motion “La Suite”, according to the partial results communicated on Saturday night by the management.

The final result and the number of voters among the 11,000 affiliated to the party will be known on Sunday.

At the end of a “decentralized” congress in the regions, the first phase of a vote to appoint the future national secretary among six candidates in contention, the ecologist members placed this representative elected from Hénin-Beaumont (Pas-de-Calais ), who he was considered the favorite and represented the outgoing leadership, supported in particular by former national secretary Julien Bayou.

According to the partial results (90% of the regions dispossessed, according to the leadership), her rival Sophie Bussiere, supported by Yannick Jadot, ranks second with 18.07% of the vote. Melissa Camara, supported by ecofeminist MP Sandrine Rousseau and part of the party’s left wing, obtained 13.54%, a “disappointing” score for Alain Coulombel, leader of the party’s left.

A “historical” score

Alliances with other lists

But to govern the party must have 60% of the seats in the Federal Council, which should force Marine Tondelier to form alliances with other lists in the next 15 days.

“The question is not whether Marine Tondelier will be national secretary. She will be. But the question is whether she will be able to enlarge to obtain a majority” and be able to govern, analyzes a movement of experts.

With this score, the members expressed “the desire that starting in January, throughout France, general states of ecology be carried out, which prepare and lead to our re-foundation, for a great movement of political ecology,” Marine added in his statement.
