Former Prime Minister Manuel Valls was fined 277,000 euros in Spain for improperly financing his campaign in the 2019 municipal elections. The sanction was handed down by the country’s Court of Accounts.
According to the independentusing information from the Catalan news portal Digital Born, the politician accepted payments from third parties. A prohibited practice according to the provisions of article 4.3 of the Law on the Financing of Political Parties in Spain.
For the Court of Auditors, it is a “very serious” offence. The sanction is the strongest imposed on a party committed to the 2019 municipal elections in Barcelona. Manuel Valls did not appeal.
Several businessmen and members of the Catalan upper class in Barcelona and Madrid participated in this illegal financing, according to local Spanish media reports.
The irregularity also refers to exceeding the maximum spending limit on outdoor advertising.
The former Barcelona mayoral candidate, who only garnered 13% of the vote, is also fighting to regain his place on the French political spectrum. In the legislative elections of June 2022, invested by the presidential majority, he had been eliminated in the first round in the 5th constituency of French residents abroad.
