“We’ll see what we do”: the majority divided around the “anti-squatting” bill

Modem deputies will not necessarily support the bill that must be examined this Monday in the National Assembly. A text highly disputed by the left and that the deputies of LR and RN could vote on.

The opposition within their own ranks. The Assembly begins this Monday the examination of a bill aimed at further punishing the invaders. A text led by Guillaume Kasbarian, Renaissance MEP and Chairman of the Committee on Economic Affairs, and which was able to be adopted thanks to the votes of MEPs LR and RN.

“We introduced a similar bill three years ago,” a National Rally deputy told BFMTV, while an elected Republican explained to us that the bill “goes in the right direction”.

Debate on the choice of the commission for this text

A guaranteed vote for the majority? Is not safe. According to our information, modern parliamentarians could play the killjoy. Since this afternoon, in fact, the negotiations are going well between the deputies Modem, Matignon and Guillaume Kasbarian to try to “land” on a law that “as it is, we are not satisfied”.

“It almost deserves a motion to reject,” said a Modem MP with a smile.

Therefore, The Modem no longer hides its embarrassment, not to mention its discontent, with a text that supposedly got the wrong parliamentary committee.

“This bill deals with the criminal, the civil, it should have returned to the Law Commission, which is used to these issues, the question of the judges, the contradictory, not the Economic Affairs Commission,” confides a Modem. deputy who considers the existing process “sufficient”. “Then you just have to make sure it’s applied correctly,” he adds.

“We don’t want to put a spoke in your wheels”

The Criminal Code establishes that a person convicted of squatting faces one year in prison and a fine of 15,000 euros. The bill examined since Monday seeks to triple these penalties, increasing the maximum prison sentence to three years and the fine to 45,000 euros. A text denounced by the left and by various associations.

Especially since François Bayrou’s party can count on the support of a member of the government and not least: Olivier Klein. The former socialist, now delegated minister in the charge of City and Housing, would like to “rebalance” a text that is far from pleasing to all the deputies of the majority.

“He spends his life with housing associations, no wonder he is against it,” breathes a Renaissance deputy in favor of the text.

The modern deputies and the majority met all afternoon with Matignon to arbitrate. “We are waiting to see how the text turns out. We have had confirmation from Matignon that they are going to rebalance the text, we have presented amendments with them, they support us,” a Modem deputy told BFMTV.

“These are our friends, we do not want to put a spoke in the wheel. If among us there is someone who votes against or abstains, it will still make headlines,” says another parliamentarian, “let’s see what we do and what follows from this law”.

vote in favor or abstain

On the side of the rapporteur, who worked hard with the Republican deputies to approve his text, it is not a question of letting this text “lose its substance”.

“To vote against, and to go and explain in your constituencies why you voted against a law that protects smallholders,” a Renaissance MP told BFMTV.

In the Modem group, some deputies should vote for it, others abstain. But several, within the Renaissance partner group, complain about the method and denounce the way of doing things of the group’s president Aurore Bergé, who is close to the speaker Guillaume Kasbarian.

“A bit of music consists, within Renaissance, especially within a small command around Aurore Bergé, in launching itself on all the themes that the RN could carry…”, observes a Modem deputy.

A process that could be explained by the absence of an absolute majority for the presidential field, and the need to convince the National Group or the Republicans to approve texts. Another elect protests against this position of the renaissance deputies around this text: “they no longer have any complex of working with the right, of being right!”.
