The president of the republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, defended this Monday that “it is necessary to keep democracy alive and to think about it constantly” to avoid the appearance of answers “outside the system and almost on the margins” .
At a conference in Braga that was part of the cycle “The future has begun”, Marcelo appealed to the non-conformity of young people in this struggle for democracy and underlined the importance of rejuvenating political institutions.
“European democracies take a long time to find solutions, and this paves the way for answers outside the system and almost at the margins of democracy,” he said.
It is necessary for the president to “take the plunge” in terms of political organization so that democracy does not succumb.
“It is necessary to keep democracy alive, to constantly rethink it (…). It is necessary to revive democracy, democracy must take the plunge,” he repeated.
Marcelo believed that political institutions are “out of step with 60, 70 or 80 percent of society”, so he called for the involvement of young people to change this reality.
“Here there is a structural problem of the renewal of the system and the protagonists of the system,” he added, referring to the low representation of young people in the Assembly of the Republic and in other political institutions.
In the end, Marcelo went with the hundreds of young people who attended the conference to watch the football match between Portugal and Uruguay, which counts for the World Cup, which takes place in Qatar.
