The PSD pointed out on Tuesday that eight governors have left in eight months of government, classifying the situation of “chaos and erosion” in the executive branch, after announcing three changes in the cast of secretaries of state.
“The three government members who are leaving today are precisely the ones who disagreed with the Minister of Economy. If they won the discussion substantively at the time, to the detriment of the Portuguese economy, they will now be suspended,” said PSD secretary General Hugo Soares, talking to journalists at the party’s national headquarters.
The Social Democratic leader pointed out that “there have been eight exits in eight months of government chaos and erosion”, with “great loss of governing political authority” by the Prime Minister, António Costa.
“We have a government in chaos in Portugal, increasingly in erosion and that is not good for Portugal. In difficult times like the one we are going through, we needed a more stable government,” he said.
Asked about the move of António Mendonça Mendes das Financeiras to a position of political coordination, Hugo Soares preferred to reiterate that the three exonerated secretaries of state (including Mendonça Mendes, reappointed to a different role) are “the three who disagree were with the Minister of Economy,” António Costa Silva, when he defended a general reduction of the IRC.
“It looks like some sort of empty dismissal,” he insisted.
Asked if he expected better political coordination in the government, the Secretary General said “this is a problem for the Prime Minister”.
“Portugal needs a strong and stable government, but it doesn’t have one,” he lamented.
The prime minister today replaced two of the three secretaries of state under the Ministry of Economy and chose António Mendonça Mendes as his deputy secretary of state, the website of the presidency of the republic on the internet reads.
“The President of the Republic on Tuesday accepted the Prime Minister’s proposals for the resignation of three secretaries of state: for tax affairs, for the economy and for tourism, trade and services, as well as for the following proposals for appointment,” he said. as on this note.
António Mendonça Mendes is leaving the positions of Secretary of State for Tax Affairs to take up the position of Deputy Secretary of State to the Prime Minister, which has been vacant since the resignation of Miguel Alves.
