The current Vice President of the City Council of Porto, Filipe Araújo, was elected President of the Board of the Civic Association “Porto, o Nosso Movimento”, the movement that led to the election of Rui Moreira as Mayor.
In a telephone interview with the Lusa bureau, Filipe Araújo, 46, said this Sunday that he was satisfied with the election for the position, which took place late Saturday afternoon in a vote “marked by high turnout”.
“I am of course very happy with the election by the members and I am already thinking about the work ahead. The movement has also been responsible for involving the whole city of Porto in an open, impartial way. […] We have become an association dedicated to discussing the issues of today, but also always looking for what the future of the city is,” he said.
Filipe Araújo, a graduate of Electrical Engineering from the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto and current Councilor responsible for Environment, Climate Transition, Innovation and Digital Transition, pledges to continue the work of Rui Moreira, the mayor of Porto, who governs the city nine years ago.
“There is a lot of political capital and also a huge legacy from Dr Rui Moreira and all of the executive that we want to continue to support. Leading the destinations of the city and also continuing to contribute to these economic, social, cultural dynamics that the city had,” he said.
On Saturday, three bodies were elected to the civic association “Porto, our movement” – management, general assembly and supervisory board.
Also elected as directors were Filipe Araújo, Pedro Baganha and Catarina Araújo (both councilors in the city), Raul Almeida, José Serôdio (Deputy of the City Council of Porto), Ariana Brás and José Pedro Araújo.
António Agostinho Guedes was elected to chair the general meeting and José Rebouta is the chairman of the supervisory board.
Filipe Araújo has been a councilor of the Porto City Council since Rui Moreira’s first term (2013) and vice president of the municipality since 2017.
