PCP says Health Secretary “shook the water off the mantle” over emergency room issues

This Tuesday, the PCP accused the Health Minister of “shaking the water off the mantle” and not taking responsibility, saying that the problems of emergency care are a problem of the organization of the health services themselves.

Asked about Manuel Pizarro’s statements, the communist deputy João Dias replied on Monday at a press conference in the Assembly of the Republic that “it is very easy to have a lack of responsibility here” from the guardianship and “to think that it is by lack of organization “that there are problems in the National Health Service (SNS).

The health minister acknowledged the existence of difficulties” and stated that the problem of emergency care “is chronic”.

“It’s a challenge, but it’s a systemic challenge. In Portugal, we have a chronic problem with emergencies. We have an excessive influx of emergencies. Is it people’s fault? I don’t think so. I think responsibility is the way is how we organize ourselves is the system. We have few alternatives,” Manuel Pizarro insisted.

Today, João Dias accused the minister of “shaking the water off his coat” and pointed to the lack of health workers as the central problem behind the emergency department problems: “It is impossible to organize if you have nothing to organize.”

“It is important that the minister, who is trying to paint a rosy scenario, speaks seriously about the issue once and for all and does not want to underestimate what health workers, but also the population, feel when they come to the emergency services. ” he added.

From the perspective of the PCP, the emergency problem stems from “a political option” of the PS and “which has now become more acute”.

The party presented a series of amendments to the statute of the SNS, which aim to end “promiscuity between private and public”.

As the most important measure, said João Dias, the SNS statute should consider the improvement of careers and salaries of health workers, and should end the “preservation of individual employment contracts”, harmful in the perspective of the PCP for “professional development”.

The transfer of powers to the municipalities in the field of health is another scourge in the eyes of the communists that the party wants to see corrected, as it is a question of “shifting responsibilities to the municipalities” that should be in the atmosphere from the government and because it will create discrepancies in the delivery of primary health care, contrary to the “universal nature of the SNS”.
