Prime Minister António Costa this Thursday honored the “memorial of those who fought and contributed” to Portugal’s restoration of independence, calling for the celebration of “sovereignty” and the “power of the national flag”, in an evocative message of the 1 December .
“Today we celebrate the restoration of Portugal’s independence, a date that evokes the affirmation of our nation and our sovereignty. We honor the memory of those who fought and contributed to this achievement”wrote the prime minister in a message on his official account on the social network Twitter.
“Reintroducing the holiday of December 1, given the symbolism of the date, is one of the measures I am most proud of as Prime Minister. Let’s value our history. Let’s honor the Republic. Let’s promote sovereignty and strength of our national flag”he added.
For health reasons, the Prime Minister did not participate in the Restoration Day suggestive session, at Praça dos Restauradores, in Lisbon, where the government was represented by Defense Minister Helena Carreiras.
The ceremony will be presided over by the Head of State, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, as well as the Mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, and the President of the Historical Society of Independence of Portugal, José Ribeiro e Castro.
On December 1, the Revolutionary Coup of 1640 took place that ended the rule of the Philippine dynasty over Portugal, removed the country from Spanish control, and placed D. João IV on the throne.
