The Assembly of the Republic authorized this Friday the visit of the President of the Republic to Cape Verde, next week, with a vote against Chega and in favor of the other parties.
In the request for consent, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa asks permission to travel to Cape Verde between December 9 and 11 “to attend the tribute ceremony and posthumous award of the degree of Doctor Honoris Causa to Amílcar Lopes Cabral”.
Amílcar Lopes Cabral was born in Bafatá (Guinea-Bissau) in September 1924, but went to live in Cape Verde as a child, where he studied.
In 1945 he received a scholarship and entered the Instituto Superior de Agronomia in Lisbon, where he came into contact with anti-fascist groups. In 1959, together with Aristides Pereira, his brother Luís Cabral, Fernando Fortes, Júlio de Almeida and Elisée Turpin, he founded the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (PAIGC).
On January 20, 1973, Amílcar Cabral is assassinated in Conakry, and is still considered one of the greatest thinkers of African anti-colonialism.
According to the Constitution of the Republic, the President of the Republic may not leave the national territory without the consent of the Assembly of the Republic.
