Retire at 65: Emmanuel Macron believes that “it will take an effort”

The French president justifies the postponement of the legal retirement age from 62 to 65 years with the desire to reduce the country’s debt and increase the level of pensions for retirees.

For Emmanuel Macron, the pension reform is essential. In an interview granted to Parisian published this Saturday, the Head of State defended a postponement of the legal age from 62 to 65 years, which he had mentioned during the presidential campaign.

A measure justified by the prospect of a lasting return to the deficit, which would exceed 12,000 million euros at the end of the five-year period, and by its refusal in principle to increase contributions or cut pensions for retirees.

“No one is happy to work a little more, but in order not to lower pensions and not put new burdens on our children, we will have to make an effort,” he says.

A “positive dynamic to start again”

Emmanuel Macron defends this reform stating that “the French economy is one of the best resistant” in Europe and that for this reason it is necessary to “maintain the course of reforms”.

“If we make the right reforms and the right investments, this will preserve our ability to create jobs and allow us to have a positive dynamic to start again,” added the French president.

“Wealth is created with work”

Emmanuel Macron promises this Saturday not to raise taxes but “on the contrary” to lower them and also refuses to “lower the level of pensions”. Consequently, he believes that investments must be financed “in the France of 2030” through “more wealth creation”.

“And wealth is created through work”, continues Emmanuel Macron.

“It is the whole sense of the priority that is given to work, be it through pension reform, unemployment insurance, professional schools, the public employment service… We have considerable potential for wealth because of our work”, concludes the Head of State in the columns of the Parisian.
