“To ally is to disappear”: Larcher rejects any rapprochement between LR and the majority

The president of the Senate judges that allying with the majority would mean that the LR is “diluted” and “has no more identity.”

The president of the Senate, LR Gérard Larcher, rejected on Sunday any idea of alliance with the majority, believing that it would “disappear” for the party that chooses its future president on Sunday. “Joining forces is diluting. “It will be our challenge, and I didn’t say it was easy,” he added.

According to him, LR should “tell the people that we are going to deal with the issues that concern them: sovereignty, identity, equity.” The mayor (LR) of La Baule Franck Louvrier advocated in the JDD that his party establish a “government contract” with Emmanuel Macron, along the lines of Nicolas Sarkozy, to whom he is close. “I do not share the choice of Nicolas Sarkozy,” replied Gérard Larcher.

The former president of the Republic “allowed us to go through an incredible financial crisis” but “we have not been in power for 11 years. We are not illegitimate,” he said.

“Fundamental differences” with the RN

While Reconquer! celebrates its first anniversary this Sunday, Gérard Larcher estimated that its president, Éric Zemmour, “is trying to relaunch this movement from the perspective of the Europeans” but “I do not share one iota of his approach”.

“We have fundamental differences” with the National Association, he also assured, listing “the management of public finances”, “the pension reform, the opening to Europe and the world”.

On immigration LR has “differences because there can be zero immigration.” But “I am not in favor of systematic regularization under the pretext of job tension,” he added. A bill planned for the beginning of 2023 should provide for a specific residence permit for live jobs but, according to Gérard Larcher, it would rather be “quotas” in this area.

For her part, Marion Maréchal, vice-president of Reconquête!, estimated in Franceinfo that “the future of the right will not pass through the Republican congress, not even because of this movement”, “which does not mean that the people of this movement do not participate in the future of the right. In the face of the double rejection of LR to alliances with the majority and with ¡Reconquista!, “the risk is isolation,” he estimated.
