“It is better to leave a little time”: Darmanin once again postpones his visit to Corsica

Beauvau postponed the trip scheduled for Thursday and Friday by the Interior Minister considering that the weather was “not favourable.” Gérald Darmanin had already postponed a visit in early October for similar reasons.

Gérald Darmanin postponed until January the trip he was going to make next Thursday and Friday in Corsica, considering, according to local elected officials, that the weather was “not favourable”, Agence France-Presse (AFP) learned this Sunday with the Ministry inland. .

“The elected officials consider that given the climate of tension around the question of the detainees and the recent arrests, it is better to leave a little time for the tension to subside,” we explained from Beauvau.

A visit already postponed to the beginning of October

On Thursday, three people, including Pierre Paoli, a Corsica Libera activist suspected of having been the leader of the National Liberation Front of Corsica (FLNC), were arrested as part of an investigation into a clandestine press conference in 2021 and into the fires that targeted the second home of a hotelier in La Clusaz (Haute-Savoie).

Elected members of the Corsican Assembly had expressed their “outrage” in September following the rejection by the Paris Court of Appeal of a new request for semi-liberty for Pierre Alessandri, 64, sentenced to life imprisonment in 2003 for the murder of the prefect from Corsica Claude Erignac and releasable since 2017.

The Home Secretary had already postponed a visit in early October for similar reasons.

“Transformation and investment plans for Corsica”

The trip planned for this week was going to be an opportunity to sign “transformation and investment plans for Corsica” in Calvi, Ajaccio and Corbara, according to the minister’s entourage. It was not part of the ongoing cycle of consultations on the future of the island, whose meetings are taking place in Paris, the same source added.

This cycle of consultations, launched in July, should extend over a year with a meeting every six weeks. So far, only one meeting has been held in mid-September.
