The former leader of the CDS-PP/Azores, Alvarino Pinheiro, a PSD dissident and regional deputy, died this Sunday on the island of Terceira at the age of 72, with the president of the government of the Azores insisting that he was “prestigious and in much” autonomy.
“We received with sadness the news of the death of Dr. Alvarino Pinheiro. He was an example of a man of convictions committed to the public cause, as a deputy in the Legislative Assembly of the Autonomous Region of the Azores and leader of the CDS-PP,” says José Manuel Bolieiro in a note on the website of the government of the Azores.
According to the president of the regional government, Alvarino Pinheiro was “a brilliant parliamentarian who brought great prestige to the Parliament of the Azores by defending democratic autonomy during the various terms of office he held on behalf of his home island, the Third, and in favor of development and cohesion of the archipelago”.

Artur Lima, President of the CDS-PP Azores, and current Vice President of the Government of the Azores, believed that Alvarino Pinheiro “leaves an indelible mark on the politics of the Azores”.
“He was an outstanding leader of the CDS-PP, holding positions such as Vice President of the Regional Legislative Assembly and President of the Municipal Council of Praia da Vitória. He was undoubtedly a great autonomous,” said Arthur Lima.
Former center leader Paulo Portas opined that Alvarino Pinheiro was “one of the most brilliant politicians” he met and stated that he “will always be indebted to the sustained and kind support he has given during 16 years of presidency of the national CDS” .
“Alvarino was an exceptional man: profound in the analysis of problems, open to everyone in his leadership style, gifted with an enthusiastic sense of humor and always, always with a sense of state and love for the Azores,” concludes Paulo Portas in a statement sent to Lusa.
Born on April 22, 1950 in the parish of Santa Cruz, in the municipality of Praia da Vitória, on the island of Terceira, Alvarino Pinheiro was one of the founders of the PSD Azores, but later found himself on a collision course with Mota Amaral, later joining to the CDS-PP, the party he led for several years after joining in 1992, until he left active politics.
He was the regional and island leader of the PSD/Azores from 1975 to 1983, joined the CDS in 1992 and since 1996 has been chairman of the CDS/PP Azores Regional Directive Commission, chairman of the CDS/PP Azores Regional Political Commission since 1998, and Chairman of the Political Commission of Terceira Island of the CDS/PP since 1993.
Alvarino Pinheiro has also been a member of the National Executive Committee of the CDS/PP since 1999, a member of the National Political Committee of the CDS/PP since 1998 and National Advisor to the CDS/PP since 1992, after serving as Vice-President held the position of President of the CDS/PP PP National Congress since September 2003.
He was a member of the Regional Legislative Assembly of the Azores since 1976, of which he was Vice President and Chairman of the CDS-PP Parliamentary Group, Professor and Economic and Financial Adviser.
