“Multispecies Family”. PAN wants legitimate absences for workers due to the death of a pet

The PAN wants employees to be able to miss one day of work due to the death of a companion animal and a maximum of five days to provide assistance “in the event of illness or accident”.

The only deputy and spokesperson for the Human-Animals-Nature party this Wednesday submitted a bill to the Assembly of the Republic to include in the Labor Act and in the General Labor Act in Public Functions that “the employee has the right to rightfully miss a working day due to the death of a pet registered in his name in the Company Animal Information System (SIAC)”🇧🇷

The PAN also wants employees to be able to do that “maximum five days of absence from work per year to provide urgent and necessary assistance in the event of illness or accident” to your pet.

“To justify the absence, the worker must provide proof of the unavoidable and essential nature of the assistance or a declaration that the pet animal has died, issued by a competent authority, namely the veterinarian or the body where the medico-veterinary care was provided”says the diploma.

Inês de Sousa Real points this out in the bill “companion animals are increasingly seen by the Portuguese as an integral part of their household” and mentions that “studies show that more than 50% of Portuguese households have a pet”🇧🇷

The deputy thinks so “the family is increasingly viewed as multispecies” and indicates that “for many people who live alone or find themselves in a situation of social vulnerability, animals are often even their only company”.

And he argues that “in the specific case of the loss of a pet, the dimension of grief should be seen as a personal and work right of the owner, given the emotional ties that unite him to the pet and the emotional charge resulting from that same loss”.
