The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, is calling this Saturday to take care of democracies with reforms and rejuvenation of key players, in a message related to the International Day of Human Rights.

In a text published on the official website of the presidency of the republic, the head of state refers to the motto chosen this year by the United Nations for this date, which marks the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights , “dignity, freedom and justice for all”. .

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa argues that “ensuring this goal is everyone’s responsibility” and implies “urgent and urgent concern for democracies on a national and global scale, in their form and content, to preserve their non-negotiable values, to develop their most crystallized elements and to rejuvenate the protagonists”.

“This is the effort that is required of us to responsibly face the major transitions the world is experiencing, and to maintain the capacity to respond to the concrete problems of flesh-and-blood people, who form communities and who so often differ from the views of political and media cycles,” he believes.

The President of the Republic states that “human rights are a fundamental achievement of humanity” and “should be respected and promoted regardless of and beyond the conveniences of the moment”.

“Let’s celebrate the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights next year, with this awareness, cultivate and fulfill the Charter in the daily lives of each of us,” he added.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa mentions that this Saturday is the “beginning of the celebration of the 75th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights”, adopted by the United Nations in 1948, “which will last until the next anniversary, in 2023 “.
