The government says it will return the extra revenue and will not control the deficit for 2023

The government says it will pay back the extra revenue from higher-than-expected economic growth and halt the immediate payment of extraordinary support as part of a strategy to bring the deficit under control in 2023.

At the end of the Council of Ministers, the holder of the portfolio of the Presidency, Mariana Vieira da Silva, was asked whether the government intends to bring forward the payment of expenditure, register it in 2022 and thus pave the way to achieving the target of 0.9. % deficit included in the state budget for 2023.

The extraordinary aid of €240, now approved by the government and aimed at around one million families receiving minimum benefits, will have an impact of around €249 million this year, but because it is extraordinary, it will have no impact at budgetary level in 2023.

“When we often repeat that one of the central elements of the government is a certain bills policy, we mean that our aim is to fully use the existing margin to increase household income, to invest in public equipment and to make life easier for companies,” replied the Presidency Minister.

Mariana Vieira da Silva said after last September that the executive presented a support package for families and businesses, then relayed that “the strategy would be to return to families all the extra income that comes from the fact that the economy has grown more than I had planned.”.

“That’s the core element and we’re doing what we said we would do. Last April, when the first support package was presented, the government precisely said that we would evaluate the evolution of the duration of inflationary phenomena, returning all available margin to households,” added the Presidency Minister.
