Montenegro: “Support of 240 euros? I’m glad they are inspired by the PSD idea”

Luís Montenegro, president of the PSD, welcomed the extraordinary support of €240 announced by the government for families in need, but recalled that the “original idea came from the PSD”. Montenegro, which is in Brussels on the sidelines of the EPP summit that traditionally hosts European summits, argues that the government should also help the middle class “to better manage the difficulties”.

“I am glad that he was inspired by the original idea of the PSD, but it was also good that, in addition to this help, he also welcomed our proposal to reduce the tax burden, the IRS for the middle class,” emphasized the president of the PSD, stating “namely for the fourth, fifth, and sixth rungs of the IRS, those are people who have incomes slightly above that and who have very high tax burdens.”

Montenegro understands that “it is still possible to act on that side, by also giving these families the opportunity to cope better with the difficulties they face, with the same difficulties arising from the cost of living that is rising and that has now been exacerbated by interest rates”.

Luís Montenegro commented on the Prime Minister’s announcement in an interview with Visão magazine, in which the head of government also reiterated his determination to stay in the position he holds for “four years”, saying that this is an idea that the Portuguese are they have to get used to it.

For the PSD chairman, “the fact that the prime minister has to stress so much about staying in power for four years already says a lot”.

“So Prime Minister, why shouldn’t he stay for four years? He got an absolute majority, he has government stability, he has all the conditions to carry out his program, that was what he lacked most to want.” exempt from this responsibility. This is his responsibility, I don’t know why he has to do this reinforcement,” he said.

Luís Montenegro was questioned on the alleged corruption case involving Greek socialist party PSOK MEP Eva Kaili.

“The PPM [a família política europeia a que pertence os PSD] is deeply committed to being able to strengthen transparency in the European institutions, whose credibility has been severely damaged by this episode involving a Socialist Vice-President of the European Parliament,” he said.

This is, in fact, a huge blow to the credibility of the European institutions, which deserves to be scrutinized to the fullest, and I would like to record here with satisfaction the firm position of the President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola, in whose intervention content I identify myself completely,” emphasized Luís Montenegro.
