IL: Carla Castro creates a public policy portfolio

The candidate for the leadership of IL Carla Castro wants to create a portfolio of public policy she deems necessary “in a party that wants to have a government vocation”, and attributes to each member of the list the dynamics of a liberal flag.

After presenting the list on December 8 to the executive committee with which she will present herself for the internal elections in January next year, Carla Castro informed the Lusa bureau about the functioning of her management, which includes an executive and a non-executive component.

In terms of portfolios, the liberal candidate wants to create a new area of relations with internal bodies and in the engineering office to implement an area for local regional and European policy, while the “liberal academy will dedicate itself to the dissemination of knowledge, both in the affirmation of foreign policy as well as in the formation of internal politics”.

“The area of public policy, which will fall under former Secretary of State Pedro Silva Martins, is an absolutely new area and it is very important in a party that wants to have a governing vocation to make this transition from ideas to proposals and then to more robust policy,” he explained.

So from an executive point of view, according to Carla Castro, “a collaborative logic will work in each department, with involvement in the different structures”, based on the “dedication of an activity report and transparency in the progress of the commitment to the movement strategic”.

“We also get the non-executive area. Each member of the executive committee will have a political flag. We are determined that no flag is left behind, because these are areas where we want to make a mark and guarantee progress,” he justifies.

For example, the leader candidate will focus on social mobility, while vice presidents Paulo Carmona and Filomena Francisco will focus on economic competitiveness and education, respectively.

The Secretary-General candidate, João Cascão, will be responsible for individual freedoms, social causes and citizenship, with “cannabis as one of the main themes”.

Health (with an emphasis on mental health), Sustainability and the environment, decentralisation, housing and mobility, social cohesion and regulation, health and social action are other areas that will receive special attention.

Other flags include employment and social security, circular economy and water policy, demographic challenges and intergenerational balances, entrepreneurship and taxation, municipal policy, energy policy and mobility, education, research and development, territory and mobility, justice, transparency and defense and the primary sector.

Carla Castro and Rui Rocha, both deputies and the current executive committee, are the two candidates for the leadership of the IL for now, after the surprise of anticipation of the party’s election calendar. Current leader João Cotrim Figueiredo is not seeking re-election.

The IL election convention will take place on January 21 and 22, 2023 in Lisbon.
