Immigration: Darmanin and Dussopt claim to offer “everything LRs have ever asked for”

The two ministers specify the contours of immigration reform and announce the creation of a residence permit for foreign caregivers as they seek to seduce the right. “We are not in massive regularization at all”, advances the Minister of the Interior

A crossed interview to try to convince. Olivier Dussopt and Gérald Darmanin specify the contours of the future immigration bill that will be presented to the Council of Ministers in January. With one main objective: to seduce the right.

“Some of the LR have understood that we are making proposals of common sense. I know this because I come from there: everything that the LR have always asked for on immigration, we offer it,” the Minister of the Interior asserts emphatically in the columns of figaro.

“We are not at all in mass regularization”

The seduction operation is far from being won. Right-wing deputies are hardly enjoying the creation of a residence permit for undocumented workers in sectors in tension. A real stone in the shoe for the government that cannot do without its support, in the absence of an absolute majority in the Assembly.

Several elected officials from rue de Vaugirard, such as Éric Ciotti, the new head of LR, who said he feared “a call for migratory air”, have already announced that they oppose this bill that will be presented to MEPs at the beginning of next year.

“We think that this (this residence permit Editor’s Note) will affect a few thousand people a year. So we are not at all in a massive regularization. Everything will be examined on a case-by-case basis”, he continues trying to reassure them. Gerald Darmanin.

“20% of the doctors who treated us during the Covid are foreigners”

The Minister of Labor also details the precise contours of this new residence permit that he wants “accessible to foreigners present in the territory for at least three years, and who have a professional seniority of at least eight months.”

But the executive who claims “his pragmatism” also reveals the creation of a “residence card for foreign talents in medicine and pharmacy.”

“Without wanting to play the provocateurs, I remind you that 20% of the doctors who treated us in France during the Covid are foreigners”, the tenant of Place Beauvau also advances in the newspaper.

“Common automatisms” between Dussopt and Darmanin

But this interview also intends to address the majority when the asylum immigration law defended by Gérard Collomb in 2018 had shattered the presidential field.

Enough to push the Minister of the Interior to exaggerate his closeness to Olivier Dussopt, who now runs Territories of Progress, considered the left wing of the Renaissance. However, one was a “Sarkozy baby” and the other an intimate of Martine Aubry.

“We both have the same ‘humus’: from modest families, activists from a young age, the two mayors of working-class municipalities… In short, we have many automatisms in common,” says the Minister of the Interior.

The bet seems to be maintained until now after a debate without a vote that took place without great tension in early December before the Assembly.
